Combat Sports Challenge 22 - “The Reckoning”

Miletich and Pulver to commentate

Sept 29, 2007, Richmond, VA, USA

The Combat Sports League returns to Richmond, VA with the 22nd installment of it’s top rated event Combat Sports Challenge 22, “The Reckoning. This premier event will take place September 29th at 7:30 pm at The Showplace. Action packed card of 9 Professional Combat Sports bouts highlighted by 3 title matches. Tickets are available at www.CombatSportsChallenge.com, the Combat Sports Center and all Richmond area Hooters locations.

UFC Legends Pat Miletich and Jens Pulver will be guest commentators at the event. Jens is making his second consecutive appearance at the CSC and Pat will make his debut appearance. During Fight week, these top trainers will hold their highly rated MMA seminar at the Combat Sports Center in Richmond on Friday night after the professional weigh-ins and press conference.

Three’s a charm, as CSC 22 is headlined by THREE professional title matches. Shane Campbell of Canada defends his WKA World Muay Thai Title against Holland’s own Chris Nigimbi. This is a rematch between two of the top fighters in the world that will leave one fighter sitting on top. In the second professional title match, American Top Team’s Ricardo Tirloni (Florida) takes on Team Combat and current Eastern Regional champion Anthony Morrison (Pennsylvania) for the vacant WKA Professional US MMA title. The third title match has the prodigy of retired Muay Thai Champion Khunpon Dechampku, Chike Lindsey, challenging Zimbabwe native Mukai Maromo for the vacant WKA Professional North American Muay Thai Title. These fights will not disappoint as all of these professionals have appeared on the CSC before to the delight of the fans.

The card is also stacked with great talent from National powerhouse gyms. Mike “The Hulk” Easton from Team Lloyd Irvin (Maryland) collides with Reynaldo Duarte of American Top Team (Florida) in Professional MMA action. The heat is turned up at Team Lloyd Irvin’s Maryland training center and the training has been ferocious as Brandon Vera checks in to ready himself for his match up against Tim Silva in an upcoming UFC fight. Team Lloyd Irvin’s rising star, Marshall Thompson, tests his skill against Miletich Fighting system’s Ramiro Hernandez.

CSC always brings the best local talent to the ring and this time is no different featuring Virginia based stars Dwayne “Diesel” Shelton (Team Combat) who is looking to improve his win streak by stopping Canada’s Nelson Sobral. Active duty Marine, Phillip Wyman will gear up for the always game Levon Maynard (Virginia) in Levon’s Pro debut.

Other pro bouts action features a Muay Thai match up between Georgia’s Brian Robertson and Holland’s Twan Aarts. Twan was known as the toughest fighter the CSC has ever seen in his last battle at the CSC.

Two professional boxing matches are also on the card to please. Richmond VA’s own, Adam “The Real Deal” Seal, looks to bring the crowd to their feet with his hard hitting toe - to - toe fighting style as he faces Carolina grown Lamont Crawford. In another match up of Virginia vs. Carolinia, Abdul Gilliard takes on Ed Edwards.

CSL will also debut it’s own brand of Submission Grappling and BJJ at the hottest new tournament, “MISSION SUBMISSION”. The event will take place during the daytime festivities at the Showplace. The twist here is that competitors will be ranked and get extra points in their Mission Submission “rating” with wins by submission.

Copa Nova Report

Friday, September 7th, 2007

At a smaller, local tournament in Sterling, VA, Team Lloyd Irvin was represented well by a few competitors, but most notably by Seph Smith.

In the Advanced welter-weight division, Seph would submit his first opponent with his signature kneebar, then avenge a prior loss to Vince Borden of Gustavo Machado, defeating his opponent 3 advantages to 1 advantage. In the finals, Seph faced off against accomplished gi competitor, Abmar Barbosa, of Brasa Team. It was a close battle, but Abmar managed to pull off a sweep to win the tightly-contested match 2-0.

In the Advanced open weight division, Seph defeated his first opponent by brabo choke and shut out his second by a score of 7-0 to take the title.

The purple belt welter-weight class was a round robin 3-man division that featured Vince Borden, Seph Smith, and a competitor from Capital Jiu-Jitsu. In the opening match, Borden would sweep and smoothly armlock the Capital JJ competitor. This left Seph to face off with the loser to determine whether he would fight for first place, but his opponent elected to drop out of the division, leaving Seph to again face off against the dangerous Borden. Seph would take this one again, though, with a pass, knee-on-belly, and back mount, ending with a score of 9-0 after narrowly defending a triangle armlock attempt from Borden in the closing seconds.

Congratulations to Seph and all the other fighters who represented the Team!

PS If we didn’t get your results, be sure to mail them to Ryan to have them posted.
