Tuesday, May 20th, 2008

Two team Lloyd Irvin members competed in the Mixed Martial Arts event called Operation Octagon this weekend.  Training Mixed Martial Arts In Maryland has been going extremely well.  First up was Mr. Justin Jones.  Justin’s first round was a ‘rough’ one, but he weathered the storm, made adjustments during the one minute break and turned the heat up during the second round.

Justin showed great heart in coming back to win this match.  You can see the entire match for yourself at the link below

Big Jeff was able to step back into the mixed martial arts octagon cage for his second match.  Jeff’s skills are really starting to come along now.  You can see how this Heavyweight transitions from position to position very well.  You can see Jeff’s match in the video below.

Make sure you tell the guys ‘congrats’ when you see them in the our Mixed Martial Arts Academy in Camp Springs Maryland.

Team Lloyd Irvin Black Belt Jared Weiner Wins The Bronze In Brazil !

Friday, May 16th, 2008

Message from Jared

I was very excited and confident going into this event. I have fought this tournament 3 times, and never made it to the medal podium. I actualy have never made it to the podium in brazil ever….until now. This is the 1st time I have fought in the masters division here, and I was feeling like i was cutting myself short from the real challenge, and I was unsure of my decision. When they released the bracket all those thoughts changed, and excitement took over. The names in the division were all top notch guys like Rodrigo “feijao” Lucinao “Casquina” Nucci. Gustavo Dantes. I knew this was where i wanted to be.

I was matched up with some dude from Gracie Humaita 1st round, and I noticed him get on the test scale over an hour before the division was called, and I happened to be standing right there, and I noticed he was 1/5 kilo over. I noticed over the next hour or so he was making no effort to cut his weight, and he was just ch illin waiting for our names to be called. I was all warmed up ready to go, and I felt 100% confident that this was gonna be a good first fight. We got to the scale, i was 3 kilos light like usual haha, and he was still 1/2kilo over weight. He looked at me, said parabens gringo, smiled, and walked off without a care in the world. He didnt want to be there in the 1st place, that was obvious. I knew if the bracket played out the way it was supposed to I would be fighting “casquina” and “feijao” back to back, and was ready for some wars.

Casquina was in the warm up area asking people if he knew my game LOL and even asked one of my training partners from Godoi club. I knew what to expect from him, since I have a bunch of footage of him from many years in the black belt. Everyone was saying he was the top dog in the division, all the Koral camera guys were there to take his pictures, the tatame reporters were even joking with him before hand, a nd that pumped me up. Basicly the fight went just as I planed. He pulled and I smashed. I kept hard pressing him the whole fight, and ended up passing twice for the 6-0 win. He was talking the whole fight, which I found kinda funny.

I knew I was in the semi, but I wasnt satisfied yet. IMO “feijao” was the man to take out on my side of the bracket. I have been watching him for a long time, and I knew EXACTLY what to expect from him. He tore up the first two guys pretty easily before me, and I had a mixture of emotions going into this fight. I knew i was fighting someone i tryed to emulate for many years, and I was extremly confident i could win this fight. He pulled first and tryed to go right to his foot in the bicep game. I defended it , and almost passed with my “tiago alves pass” He kicked me square in the face to defend, and regained hs guard and I ended up with both arms under, and trying to stay tight. (he apologized after we settl ed in the position) eventualy he regained his foot in the bicep and ended up sweeping me with a really nice position. I settled into a deep half guard with about 2 mins left. I was only down 2-0 so i wanted to sweep with about 1 min left and try to settle on top for the win. Well that didnt work out the way I wanted, I almost swept with the “celso sweep” but he stepped out of it , and we scrambled to the feet. I knew I had to press for a takedown, and when I went to grip he shot a single and took me down, and secured for the 4-0 win. I was upset, but he played me with a lot of respect, and took a slow aproach to my game.

I ended up with 3rd place, and I knew i had some wars to get there. Where else in the world can you fight guys like casqunia and feijao back to back. I really wanted to get past this semi final hump I have been stu ck at, but I am gonna keep pressing and training 100 times harder.

thanks to Brad, Ryan, and Renato Tiexiera for sticking by me all day, and coaching me.
that was my experiance.

Nyjah Easton Wins The GOLD At The 2008 Pan Ams- Now Looking For A World Title!

Thursday, May 15th, 2008

After winning almost everything possible in grappling and brazilian jiu jitsu. Nyjah Easton like all BJJ competitors was on a quest for the holy grail “THE GOLD MEDAL” in one of the MAJOR tournaments.  Very few people ever accomplish this feat.  After taking the Bronze medal in Brazil as a blue belt at the 2006 Brazilian Jiu Jitsu World Championships. After taking the Silver medal at the 2007 Brazilian Jiu Jitsu World Championships in the purple belt division.

Nyjah Easton ‘finally’ accomplished one of her dreams by winning her purpler belt division at the 2008 Pan Am Championships.

Being able to stand at the top of the podium of a major event like the Pan Ams, World Championships and the Brazilian Nationals is every BJJ Competitors dream.

Nyjah has accomplished this.

Next stop, The Brazilian Jiu Jitsu World Championships on June 7, 2008

Congrats Nyjah and Team Lloyd Irvin
