Ryan Hall is one of the most talked about grapplers in the World at the moment. He’s been marketed as the next big thing and he’s been living up to the hype BUT>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> his critics have always pointed out that he’s never won a “Major” title in jiu jitsu.

It seems that Ryan has been able to tap black belts since he was a blue belt, he has over 200 triangle submissions in competition and he’s won almost every possible tournament except the Major one’s.

But 2008 would be different, Ryan became 2008 No Gi World Champion, then he was looking like the favorite going into the Pan Ams but as fate would have it, Ryan got into a severe car accident the day before the Pan Ams. He had to pull out of the Open devision but ended up doing his division, losing to Chase Weaton in his second or third match. You could tell something was wrong with Ryan because he was rolling different. As Chase celebrated his win in the middle of the mat jumping up and down, looking up at his fellow Alliance members cheering him on Ryan fell short from winning the Pan Ams.

The next day he went to the hospital to discover that he had a concussion, the doctor couldn’t believe that he even competed. Ryan wanted to get back into the swing of things and headed off to Brazil to compete in what is considered the toughest tournament in the World. The Brazilian National Championships. Ryan took the bronze medal in the Brazilian Nationals which was a huge accomplishment. In the process of winning the Bronze medal at the Brazilian Nationals, Ryan defeated the person that had won the Gold medal at the Pan Ams which was a little redemption for him.

But the Holy Grail is the World Championships. The day had come and Ryan submitted his first 3 opponents with the Triangle Choke! Defeated his next 2 by points/ref decision and in the finals he would meet Chase from Alliance again. Remembering how Chase celebrated after his victory at the Pan Ams, Ryan was really looking forward to this match.

In the end, Chase wouldn’t be able to celebrate this time, Ryan scored 4 points with a back take and that secured the win for Ryan. Ryan Hall is the 2008 Brazilian Jiu Jitsu World Champion.
