Nyjah Easton Has Her Very First Match vs. A Female Black Belt.

Thursday, October 16th, 2008

Nyjah Easton fresh off a spectacular 2008 season, winning both the 2008 pan ams and 2008 World Championships at the purple belt level.

Nyjah received her brown belt and was looking to challenge herself against the BIG DOGS of the brown and black belt divisions.  Then her wishes came true, a tournament in San Diego was looking for an opponent for Female BJJ Black Belt World Champion Michelle Nicolini.

I guess if you want to test yourself, you might as well do it against the ‘very best’.  Everything seemed perfect, Nyjah was going to get her very first match against the best black belt in her weight class (pluma). At the last moment Michelle wasn’t able to compete anymore.

Then they were having a extremely hard time to find a replacement, it didn’t look like Nyjah was going to have an opponent.

Then the promoter said he found another black belt who had took the silver and the bronze in the last 2 Black Belt World championships, the only problem was that she was 2 weight classes heavier than where Nyjah fought(leve). When Nyajh found out she didn’t care and just wanted to go and compete.

So Nyjah and Lenny took off to San Diego(well kind of), they missed their flight, got booked on a 2nd wrong flight and they we’re told that all flights where booked and there was no way they could get to San Diego.  So what did they do? They flew to LA, slept in the airport for 6 hours and then caught a flight to San Diego to compete.

The story is much crazier than that, but you gotta hear it directly from Lenny or Nyjah(so ask them about it the next time you see them in class).

Anyway Nyjah finally got to compete in the black belt division.  After pulling guard Nyjah hits a lightning fast sweep to score 2 points, a few minutes later Gabby hits a sweep on Nyjah, score is 2-2, then Nyjah said “the passing pressure that I felt was out of this World”, after awhile Gabby passed Nyjah’s guard, near the late period of the match Gabby was able to secure a side choke in and finish Nyjah for the victory.

Nyjah was very excited as she learned what to expect at that level. Nyjah said “It was a great learning experience.  I need to start working more with the heavier guys in the school, her passing pressure was extremely tight”, “I can’t wait until this years Worlds, but I need some more matches like this one”

Next up, “The US OPEN”

2008 No Gi Pan Ams

On October 4 2008, Lenny Maggio Traveled to the No Gi Pan Ams in New York. After a disappointing showing at this year’s Mundials, he was determined to make a statement. He fought in the blue belt leve division which he won after having six matches which were all won by submission and with only one match going past the 3 minute mark.

Team Lloyd Irvin phenom - JT Torres, and Team Lloyd Irvin Black Belt Jared Weiner both also won their divisions against some tough opponents. JT Submitted EVERYONE in the brown belt division including Bruno Tostes in the finals. Jared Tapped his first opponent and in the finals scored a takedown to secure his victory.

Here is the breakdown of Lenny’s matches:

First Match:

His opponent sets up a good double-leg and Lenny immediately locks up a guillotine, his head pops out and Lenny has his guard locked up with an overhook and right away attacks with a push though triangle which is locked up tight, he creates the angle and his opponent taps.

Second Match:

Lenny Takes his opponent down with a kneepick, locks down the half guard then passes to side control. His opponent turtles in, Lenny controls the hips and takes his back immediately and works to finish. The opponent moves to escape the back by turning into guard, Lenny quickly bumps him to mount, his opponent posts his hand on the ground and Lenny attacks with triangle and puts him to tap.

Third Match:

In the third match, Lenny and his opponent lock up, Lenny snaps him down and into a guillotine and jumps guard, opponent forward rolls to escape, Lenny rolls up and takes his back, secures the hooks and taps him with a rear naked choke.

Fourth Match:

This match started with Lenny attacking the guillotine and jumping guard, opponent gets out and Lenny attacks with triangle, he escapes and Lenny goes for a kimura which causes his opponent to roll, Lenny then works to take his back they scramble out of bounds and are restarted in the center in Lenny’s guard. He sits up and attacks with kimura, switches to triangle, then omaplata which made his opponent roll out, Lenny sat back to guard and attacked armbar, he escaped and tried to pass, Lenny sweeps, opponent sits up to single leg, Lenny sprawls and guillotines causing him to roll out, Lenny comes up and takes his back, secures hooks and finishes him with the rear naked choke.

Fifth match, semi finals:

Lenny reaches for single, opponent kicks back and Lenny jumps guillotine, opponents head pops out and Lenny works to sweep him, he defends and Lenny catches him in a triangle in the transition causing his opponent to tap.

Sixth Match, Finals:

In the Finals, a lot of hand fighting, and Lenny’s opponent pulls guard. Lenny locks down the half guard. Lenny attacks with the Brabo choke causing his opponent to turtle, Lenny then attacks with the triangle and locks it up. His opponent is defending well, so he keeps the triangle but attacks with the kimura, sweeps him and finishes him from the top.
